Design NewsDesign TrendsIt’s true! Shag is back! Not necessarily the shag we remember from the 1970’s, but more of a modest type shag, or friezes. Today’s more modern chicer shags have shorter pile heights and wide varieties of colors. These modern shags or friezes contain newer technology which increases the longevity and durability, reducing wear patterns and improving performance.

As was in 2010, in 2011 being eco-friendly and choosing “Green” products are still popular in design trends. Bamboo, cork floors, reclaimed hardwood and recycled carpet are all ways to be environmentally friendly and on the cutting edge of design. There many options available!

Earth Friendly ProductsPut away the neutral colors, honeysuckle, vintage reds, and bright reds are the hot colors of 2011. Neutral colors are the accents to bright fun colors. Allergies and Asthma…Carpet May Even Be Helpful

Multiple studies found that carpet may be helpful to humans. An 18 nation study of nearly 20,000 people found a statistical relationship between carpeted bedrooms and reduced asthma symptoms and bronchial responsiveness. It seems that carpet actually keeps allergens out of the air. More allergens are delivered to humans from furniture and mattresses than any type of carpet. Must be that our nose and mouth do not spend much time on the carpet.

Routine Care and Maintenance for your carpet:

1. Frequent vacuuming is a must!

It is one of the easiest things you can do and can help maintain your carpets original appearance. Making sure you have the right vacuum is important and that it can be adjusted to the right height depending on your type of carpet. Vacuums with beater bars and brushes help loosen dirt and soil; these tend to work better than a standard canister vacuum. It is usually a good idea to vacuum once a week to prevent gritty build up on your carpets fibers.

2. Reduce Traffic and Retain Your Carpet's Texture

To prolong the appearance and overall life of your carpet, reduce the amount of traffic in heavily traveled, carpeted areas, as these areas will receive the most wear. Use rugs under and in front of heavily used furniture and clean these rugs on a regular basis. Furniture and area rugs should also be moved periodically to reduce the wear on these paths. Heavy furniture can also cause permanent indentations in your carpet, and it is important to use furniture glides or cups under the legs of heavy pieces.

3. Take care of Stains immediately!

As soon as a stain occurs it is important to address it immediately the sooner it is cleaned the easier it will be to completely remove. First, blot access liquid with a paper towel or clean cloth. Liquid stain removers should not be immediately applied to the stain as it will only cause it to get larger and sink into the carpets fibers. Once the area has dried then a stain remover can be used. Use as little as possible and start around the edges and move to the center to stop further spreading of the stain. Do not rub! And allow to completely dry.

4. Professional carpet cleaning.

Professional carpet cleaning every 18 months is an important part of you carpet care regimen. Most carpet manufacturer’s state in their warranties that you are to have your carpet cleaned every 18 months to keep it active. This will also help prolong the appearance and life of your carpet. Please ask an Exclusive Floor Covering associate for a recommendation to a Professional Carpet Cleaning company.

Hardwood floor Prevention

DIRT and GRIT:
Dirt, grit and sand are your hardwood floor’s worst enemies.
They act like sandpaper on the finish, causing scratches, dents and dulling. Place floor mats at entrances to trap dirt and prevent damage.

WATER AND OTHER SPILLS:
Standing water can warp a poorly finished hardwood floor and can damage the finish. Simply wipe up all spills as they happen.

HARD CLEANERS:
Avoid oil soaps. They can build up and create problems when it’s time to put a maintenance coat on the floor. Instead, neutral pH cleaners made specifically for wood floors are recommended.

FURNITURE:
Lift the furniture to move it, avoid dragging. Felt pads under the legs will help prevent scratches.

DENTS:
Vacuum with a brush attachment, don’t use vacuums with beater bars.

SUN:
Direct sun can discolor your hardwood floor. Close curtains and blinds or add sheer drapes to protect from the sun’s intense UV rays.
